Genomic Study Points to Natural Origin of COVID-19 — NIH Director’s Blog
Provenance: By Dr. Francis Collins, Director of the National Institutes of Health · a nine-page browser printout taken 27 March 2020 at 9:48 AM · stored as page images and read by OCR.
The NIH Director’s public post summarising the Nature Medicine paper on the virus’s proximal origin, printed to PDF and filed into the intelligence record. It is a United States government work, so it is described here at length.
Collins opens by referring to what he calls outrageous claims that the virus was engineered in a laboratory and deliberately released, and states that the new study debunks such claims by providing evidence the virus arose naturally.
The findings come from genomic analyses by an international team partly supported by NIH, published in Nature Medicine by Kristian Andersen of Scripps and Robert Garry of Tulane with colleagues.
The central argument: existing computer models predicted the virus would bind the human ACE2 receptor less well than SARS, but the spike protein bound far better than predicted — most likely through natural selection exploiting a previously unidentified alternate binding site. A bioengineer designing a dangerous coronavirus, the post reasons, would probably never have chosen that spike conformation.
The printout runs to nine pages because it captures the public comment thread beneath the post, including a sceptical exchange questioning whether resemblance to something else establishes the absence of design. The last two pages are NIH site furniture.
Item 56 shows an analyst attaching this exact printout to an internal chain as evidence of the scientific consensus — and a colleague forwarding that same chain nearly six years later with the comment that the IC took direction straight from NIH.
Item 51 of the ODNI COVID-19 document release of 18 June 2026, held complete and readable in the V.A.D.E.S. archive at DEFROST.WORLD.
